Plans are under way for the modernization of the 4th floor. The goal of the 4th floor renovation is to co-locate multiple research groups in WCER that are interested in collaborating more closely on common thematic areas of investigation. The intention is to create a space that facilitates sustained interaction among researchers from different parts of WCER in order to explore and accomplish work that the participating groups would not undertake individually. To submit a question about the process, please contact Bob Mathieu.

FAQs

How will the occupancy level of the 4th floor be affected by the modernization?

There are currently 52 occupants. The occupancy of the modernized 4th floor will be 50-60 people. This might include one or two multi-project groups and research themes.

When will the current 4th floor occupants be asked to move in order to start the renovation?

The current schedule has construction starting in summer 2019, which would suggest moving mid-spring or so. Updates will be provided as we finalize plans.

Page 1 of the memo notes that new occupants of 4th floor would have a role in its design, and that a design firm has been contracted…yet as far as I can tell, the letter of interest doesn’t ask potential new 4th floor occupants to describe *how* they would propose using the new space to work collaboratively (it just asks them to state who would be involved in possibly relocating)? In other words, are you interested more in (a) identifying projects that might be interested in locating to a new floor whose layout has already been determined (more or less), and/or (b) gathering actual input on layout (which might, in turn, influence level of interest in relocating to 4)? As currently worded, the memo implies more (a) to me?

Yes, the memo was intended to be more along the lines of (a): projects that would be interested in locating to a new floor whose layout promotes interdisciplinary collaboration. The layout will not have been already determined. Once selected, the future occupants will be closely engaged with the designers in the actual layout to suit their purposes.

I would love to write a proposal for this to co-locate [my three projects]. But all those grants run out in 2020. Will that fact reduce my chances of success? Of course we hope to keep all those projects going, but there’s always uncertainty about these things.

I think the bigger issue is that one PI pulling together his/her projects in one place isn’t of the scale that I’m looking for. I’m looking for cross-PI/project connections.

Would you anticipate a single letter of interest from a group of people/projects, or just letters from each individual research group with an indication of the type of multi-project group they’d be interested in joining?

A single letter from a group of projects, signed by all of the relevant PIs. That said, I am willing to connect projects who write to me with an indication of the type of multi-project group they would be interested in joining. To be clear, I will not develop groups of people/projects, but I will connect separate inquiries to me that might be related.

What do I do in the event of an emergency?
